The four subjects that are tested are (not all schools test all subjects):

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

The examinations are made to evaluate a student’s proficiency in subjects that they should have already studied in class by the time they take the test.

Students’ comprehension of a text (reading), their spelling, and their ability to write coherently (punctuation and grammar) are all assessed in English classes. English assessments frequently consist of a lengthy writing assignment as well as reading and spelling activities.

Students in Maths are assessed on a broad range of subjects. Tests may or may not be multiple choice depending on the location where students are taking them.

As Verbal Reasoning (VR) involves problem-solving and the application of knowledge rather to just what is traditionally taught in school, it is thought to be an excellent approach to assess a student’s potential ability rather than just what they can already do.

Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) examinations are used to evaluate a child’s aptitude regardless of how well they know the language. NVR is used to evaluate a child’s problem-solving skills rather than academic aptitude.
